From the Polar Express to dazzling Christmas lights, this Smoky Mountain town offers a holiday escape worth the drive.

Some towns decorate for Christmas, but Bryson City is different: Santa arrives by train, the streets glow with holiday lights, and the surrounding Smoky Mountains provide a backdrop straight out of a Christmas card.

Located roughly five hours from Raleigh, this western North Carolina destination transforms into a festive mountain getaway each November and December. And while the famous Polar Express train ride might be the biggest attraction, there’s plenty more happening around town to justify packing an overnight bag and staying for the weekend.

The Polar Express Train Ride in Bryson City

For many families, Christmas in Bryson City begins at the historic Great Smoky Mountains Railroad Depot.

Inspired by Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved children’s book, The Polar Express Train Ride brings the holiday story to life aboard decorated passenger cars as they travel through the mountains toward the North Pole.

Along the way, passengers are treated to hot chocolate, sweet treats, music, and plenty of holiday entertainment. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas pajamas, adding to the fun.

The highlight comes when the train reaches the North Pole to pick up Santa Claus. On the return journey, Santa visits the passenger cars, presenting children with a silver sleigh bell, just like in the story.

The Polar Express’ season begins November 5 and continues into early January. With multiple departures and select dates, advance reservations are highly recommended, especially with dates closer to Christmas.

After the train ride, the holiday celebration continues just minutes from downtown at the Smoky Mountain Christmas Lights drive-through spectacular.

Held at Great Smoky Mountains Event Park, the attraction features an impressive collection of illuminated displays, including towering Christmas trees, colorful arches, a glowing holiday train, and seasonal scenes.

The 2026 display opens November 6 on select dates and continues through January 2, 2027. Admission is $20 per car or family van, with proceeds supporting local nonprofit organizations.

Located about 10 minutes from the railroad depot, the light show lets visitors enjoy both attractions in one evening.

The festivities extend well beyond The Polar Express.

Bryson City embraces the season with decorated storefronts, a tall Christmas tree, colorful lights, and streets that invite visitors to slow down and explore.

The annual Christmas tree lighting takes place on November 28, while the town’s Christmas parade returns December 5, featuring marching bands, festive floats, classic cars, and Santa himself.

Holiday shopping is another attraction, with locally owned boutiques, galleries, and specialty stores offering gifts that go beyond the usual mall selections.

For additional winter fun, The Yard, located near the train depot, features a seasonal outdoor synthetic ice-skating rink, complete with skate rentals and warming igloos.

Families can also visit Darnell Farms for its Christmas Wonderland hayrides, featuring festive decorations and illuminated farm scenery.

The nearby Nantahala Outdoor Center joins the celebrations with Breakfast With Santa on December 5 and its North Pole Down South & Merry Market on December 6, offering holiday shopping, crafts, and photo opportunities with Santa.

Visitors looking for a little outdoor adventure can spend a morning exploring the Deep Creek area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where several waterfalls are accessible by hiking trails.

And after a full day of holiday activities, there’s something especially inviting about returning to a cozy mountain cabin, enjoying a warm meal, and settling in for a quiet evening.

For Triangle residents looking to trade crowded shopping centers for mountain views and a little Christmas nostalgia, Bryson City might be just the holiday getaway they’re searching for.

Darius Rucker may have sung about heading to Johnson City, Tennessee, in his hit “Wagon Wheel,” but we’re suggesting a little holiday detour. Point that wagon toward Bryson City, North Carolina, instead. Hot chocolate is waiting, Christmas lights are glowing, and a train is headed straight for the North Pole. And who knows? You might even come home believing in a little Christmas magic again.
