Whitley Law Firm Puts 100 Raleigh Kids on New Bikes

For many children, a first bicycle represents much more than transportation. It offers a taste of freedom, a reason to spend time outside, and the confidence that comes from exploring the neighborhood on their own.

This summer, Whitley Law Firm hopes to provide that experience to 100 local children through Whitley Wheels Forward, the firm’s inaugural bicycle giveaway and community celebration.
The event will take place Friday, Aug. 14, from 3–6 p.m. near Whitley Law Firm’s Raleigh office at 1000 Social St. Selected children will receive a new bicycle and helmet, while families are invited to enjoy music, food trucks, games and other activities.

The idea grew from one of the law firm’s core values: “We are a community.”

“That means showing up for your community when they are in need,” says Alex Johnston, marketing manager for Whitley Law Firm. “We wanted to create something that would have a lasting impact on local families, especially children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to own a bike.”

For families balancing the cost of housing, food, childcare, and other necessities, buying a bicycle may not be possible. What many people consider a childhood staple can become a luxury.

“We’ve heard from families where buying a bike simply isn’t possible because they’re focused on paying for necessities,” Johnston says. “Stories like this remind us that something many people see as a childhood staple can actually be a luxury for others.”

The firm chose to give away 100 bicycles to make a meaningful impact during the program’s first year. Parents and legal guardians may enroll children in pre-K through fifth grade for a chance to receive a bike and helmet.

For Johnston, the program is about giving children more than something to ride.
“A bike represents freedom, independence and possibility,” she says. “It encourages kids to get outside, stay active and build confidence while exploring the world.”

Organizers also wanted the giveaway to feel like a community celebration rather than a simple bike pickup. The afternoon will include family-friendly entertainment and activities designed to give children and their parents an experience they can enjoy together.
“Community is built when people come together, connect and celebrate,” Johnston says. “The bikes are the centerpiece, but the event is really about creating memories for children, their families and their community.”

Although Whitley Law Firm is known for its personal injury work, Johnston says supporting local families reflects the same compassion that guides the firm’s work with clients.
“We believe in strengthening the communities we serve before they ever even need a lawyer,” she says.

Organizers hope Whitley Wheels Forward becomes an annual tradition and inspires other businesses and community members to invest in local families.

“As for the bikes, I hope they’re ridden every day,” Johnston says. “I hope kids spend more time outside, make new friends, build confidence, and create new childhood memories.”
