Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile—and they affect far more than just your teeth. Dr. Macon Singletary of North Raleigh Periodontics & Implant Center shares practical, expert-backed ways to protect and improve periodontal health.
1. Brush More Often—and Gently
Dr. Singletary recommends brushing four times a day—after meals and before bed—to reduce bacteria that irritate gums. Use an extra-soft toothbrush and focus gently along the gumline. Bonus Tip: If brushing isn’t possible, rinsing with water still helps.
2. Clean Between Your Teeth Daily
Brushing alone can’t reach between teeth, where gum disease often begins. Daily flossing, interdental brushes, or a water flosser can remove bacteria that cause inflammation. If your gums bleed, keep going—regular cleaning often improves it. Bonus Tip: Water flossers work especially well for implants, crowns, and bridges.
3. Watch for Early Warning Signs
Gum disease is often painless at first. Watch for bleeding, redness, swelling, persistent bad breath, or gums pulling away from teeth. Early attention makes treatment simpler and more effective. Bonus Tip: Ongoing bad breath may signal a gum issue.
4. Don’t Ignore Nighttime Habits
Clenching or grinding—especially during sleep—can worsen gum and bone loss by placing excess force on inflamed tissues. Bonus Tip: Morning jaw soreness or headaches may be clues.
5. Get a Personalized Assessment
Not all gum disease is the same. Dr. Singletary offers advanced bacterial DNA testing to identify the specific bacteria present, allowing more precise, personalized treatment—and better long-term results.
