Finding an easygoing bottle for Tuesday night and hunting down a special Champagne for a milestone celebration might seem like two different shopping trips. But at Prism Fine Wine in Raleigh, both are part of the same experience. And with a comfortable lounge tucked behind the retail area, visitors can also settle in for a glass before heading home.

Located at 1829 Capital Boulevard, near downtown Raleigh, the independent wine shop belongs to Duncan Bastin, whose idea is straightforward: offer interesting wines from around the world without making anyone feel they need an expert’s vocabulary to enjoy them.

“We don’t want it to be pretentious,” Bastin said.

Bastin came to North Carolina after working in the wine business in California and Las Vegas. His fiancée, a doctor, accepted a job in the Triangle, and he eventually found an unconventional retail space that suited the kind of wine shop he wanted to create. Its slightly tucked-away location comes with one practical advantage: convenient, free parking.

A World of Wine for Every Budget

The shelves at Prism Fine Wine span a considerable range, with everyday bottles starting around $20 and rare, collectible wines reaching $1,000 or more. Bastin points out that shoppers can find an entire section of wines priced below $40, making the shop as useful for a casual dinner as it is for a significant anniversary.

It is also a place to find something unexpected.

The selection extends well beyond the usual French, Italian, and California offerings. South African, Slovenian and Hungarian wines have all found their way onto the shelves, alongside familiar regions and producers. Bastin works with approximately 15 suppliers, relationships that help him source both affordable discoveries and limited-allocation bottles.

“We want to highlight some small producers and some wines that people may not have had an opportunity to try before,” he said.

Prism Fine Wine Puts Champagne in the Spotlight

Champagne is a particular strength. The shop offers bottles for celebrations and others for enthusiasts looking to explore the differences between famous houses and smaller grower-producers.

The shop’s online Champagne inventory lists dozens of selections, from recognized names such as Laurent-Perrier and Dom Pérignon to less familiar producers. Bastin also mentioned prestigious bottles such as Cristal during an interview, illustrating the breadth of the shop’s sparkling wine offerings.

Burgundy is another personal favorite. Bastin says white Burgundy was his first great wine love, and he still gravitates toward Chablis and wines from villages such as Puligny-Montrachet. Yet he is quick to point out that the best bottle depends on the occasion and the people sharing it.

A Wine Lounge Made for Lingering

Prism Fine Wine offers more than browsing and buying. Behind the shop is a relaxed lounge where guests can take a seat and enjoy wine without the formality of a traditional tasting room.

The shop currently offers roughly five to seven wines by the glass, giving guests a chance to try something without committing to a bottle or unwind with a friend. Comfortable seating and an unhurried atmosphere make the area feel like an extension of the neighborhood rather than another retail counter.

Bastin isn’t trying to create another traditional wine bar. Instead, he envisions a comfortable gathering place where customers can share a bottle, enjoy conversation, and discover something new.

For longtime collectors, Prism Fine Wine offers access to bottles worth seeking out. For everyone else, it offers a chance to discover a new weeknight favorite, explore a different country, or enjoy a glass somewhere quiet.

And sometimes, that is exactly what a good Raleigh wine shop should be.
