The Lumbee and the Coharie draw their tribal names from local rivers; the Meherrin call themselves “people of the water” in reference to the rivers, wetlands, and sounds of their home; the Waccamaw Siouan creation story features a lake. North Carolina tribes identify themselves by the landscapes and sacred places where they live, or once lived.
